Music and Machine Learning Research

The HMC MIR research lab explores the intersection of music, machine learning, and signal processing.  Our goal is to train machine learning and signal processing ninjas using music as a playground.  You can find out more about our research and team on our lab website.

We are looking for 5-7 undergraduate research assistants for summer 2023.  This is a paid 10-week internship on the Harvey Mudd College campus through the Summer Research College.  Students will apply modern machine learning and signal processing tools to problems in music and audio, receive in-depth mentoring, and write a research paper.  The internship will include an international trip to Germany to participate in an inaugural joint workshop with the International Audio Labs Erlangen, a leading music and audio research lab.  In addition, students who successfully publish a peer-reviewed conference paper will be provided funds to attend and present their work at an international conference.

Ideal candidates will have strong programming skills, experience and demonstrated interest in machine learning and/or signal processing, and be enthusiastic about our lab’s research.  Having a strong background in music is a definite plus, but not required.  Candidates with expertise in music genres that our lab has not explored (e.g. hip hop, dance, jazz, gospel) are especially encouraged to apply.  Project topics will either be continuations of current work or new topics designed around students’ interests and areas of expertise.

For detailed instructions on how to apply, please see our lab website.  (Please apply through our lab website, not through the uro website.)  Applications are due November 13, and will be accepted on a rolling basis afterwards until the positions have been filled.
